Christmas in Rome — A Magical 3 Day Festive Escape

If you're looking for a magical festive getaway, Rome at Christmas is absolutely incredible. We spent 2 nights / 3 days exploring the city, enjoying fewer crowds, better prices, and surprisingly warm weather (comfortable sightseeing without the summer heat!).

Here’s exactly how our Christmas trip to Rome looked, plus my top recommendations.

🏨 Where We Stayed — Leonardo Monti

We stayed at Leonardo Monti, which was in a fantastic location, about a 10 minute walk to the Trevi Fountain and close to everything we wanted to see. The Monti area itself has a lovely local feel with cafés, restaurants, and beautiful streets.

👉 Perfect base for short city breaks where you want to walk everywhere.

📅 Day 1 — Trevi Fountain, Christmas Markets & Pizza Making

  • ⛲ Trevi Fountain

We arrived around lunchtime and headed straight to the Trevi Fountain. One thing that really impressed us was how well it’s managed, the queue moves quickly and visitor numbers are controlled, so it never feels overly crowded. This makes it much easier to take photos and actually enjoy the experience.

    Must-do traditions:

    • Toss a coin and make a wish (guarantees your return to Rome!)

    • If you're visiting as a couple, drink from the small fountain on the right-hand side, not many people know about this, and legend says it promises eternal love ❤️

  • Christmas Market in Piazza Navona

Afterwards, we explored the Christmas markets in the square, which were beautifully festive and full of atmosphere. Don't expect the usual christmas markets though. Rome is all about the kids and nativity not big on the drinking.

  • 🍕 Pizza Making Class — Highly Recommended

We also did a pizza-making experience, easily one of the highlights of the trip. It was fun, interactive, and a great way to experience Italian culture beyond sightseeing.

📅 Day 2 — Ancient Rome & Festive Evenings

  • 🏛️ Colosseum

We booked the Colosseum in advance — and Christmas is an amazing time to visit because you avoid the huge summer queues. The scale and history are incredible. We actually ran out of time to explore the surrounding gardens and Roman Forum properly as we had dinner reservations but this worked out well because our ticket allowed us to return the next day.

  • ⛰️ Spanish Steps

After dinner we visited the Spanish Steps, which were beautifully decorated and buzzing with festive energy.

  • 🎄 Christmas World

We also visited Christmas World.👉 Great for families with children, but there isn’t loads for adults.

  • 🎭 Piazza Trilussa — Rome’s Famous Performing Square

We ended the night at Piazza Trilussa, full of street performers, Christmas markets, and a lively festive atmosphere. From there we wandered along Rome’s beautiful shopping streets before heading back.

Top Tips - Theres a great spot for photos infront of the Collosseum across the road and up the steps and go to the Spanish steps for Sunset

📅 Day 3 — Vatican City & Departure

  • 🌿 Colosseum Gardens & Roman Forum Return

We returned to explore the Colosseum gardens and surrounding areas properly — a great bonus since the ticket allows you to revisit.

  • ⛪ Vatican Museums & Sistine Chapel

We then visited the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel, absolutely breathtaking and a must-see.

  • ⛪ St Peter's Square & St Peter's Basilica

We finished in St Peter’s Square, visited the cathedral, and then headed home. The perfect ending to the trip.
