Oslo, Norway’s winter wonderland, offers the perfect setting for a magical Christmas weekend. With its snow-dusted landscapes, cosy cafes, and endless activities for thrill-seekers and Christmas lovers alike, this Nordic capital guarantees unforgettable holiday memories. Here’s how to make the most of your festive weekend in Oslo.

Morning: Start your weekend at Frognerseteren, a picturesque area perched above Oslo, perfect for sledging. Rent a sledge and race down the winding trails of the Korketrekkeren (the "Corkscrew"), Oslo's iconic sledging track. This 2-kilometer run is exhilarating for all ages and offers breath taking views of the snow-covered forests. You can hire all the equipment and clothing once you are up there. Unfortunately there wasn't enough snow for our visit so we walked the track down to the Ski Jump instead. (See below)
Once you’ve worked up an appetite, head to the Frognerseteren Restaurant & Cafe, famed for its rustic charm and delicious traditional treats. Warm up with a cup of steaming hot chocolate and try their famous cinnamon buns or a hearty bowl of Norwegian stew.
Afternoon: From Frognerseteren, make your way to the Holmenkollen Olympic Ski Jump. This world-renowned landmark is a must-see, offering panoramic views of Oslo and the fjord from its observation deck. For the adventurous, try skiing on the surrounding slopes or take a lesson at the ski center nearby.
Evening: Wrap up your day with a visit to one of Oslo’s enchanting Christmas markets, like the one at Spikersuppa. Browse handmade crafts, sample Norwegian delicacies like roasted almonds and mulled wine, and soak in the festive ambiance under sparkling lights.
Day 2: Waterfront Wonders and Winter Wellness
Morning: Begin your day with a fjord boat tour. Bundle up and hop on a guided cruise through Oslo Fjord, where you’ll marvel at the tranquil beauty of the islands and snow-covered shoreline. Many tours include commentary on Oslo's history and even stops at cosy seaside towns for a taste of local life.
Afternoon: After the crisp air of the fjord, it’s time to relax and rejuvenate. Experience Oslo's famous floating saunas, like the KOK Sauna, moored along the waterfront. These cosy, wood-fired saunas offer a quintessential Nordic wellness experience. If you’re feeling brave, take a dip in the icy fjord—a refreshing tradition that’s sure to leave you invigorated.
Late Lunch: Head to the Aker Brygge seafront for a meal. Indulge in fresh seafood like grilled salmon or king crab at one of the area’s stylish restaurants, all while enjoying views of the harbour.
Evening: Round out your day with some exciting ice hockey action. Check the schedule for the Oslo Vålerenga team and watch them in action. The atmosphere is electric, and it’s a great way to experience a beloved local sport.
Day 3: Culture, Shopping, and Festive Farewell
Morning: Ease into your final day with a visit to Vigeland Park, the world’s largest sculpture park created by a single artist. In winter, the park takes on a serene, almost mystical quality under a blanket of snow.
Late Morning: Dive into the Christmas spirit at the Norwegian Folk Museum’s Christmas Fair, where you can explore traditional wooden houses, live folk music, and artisan markets offering unique gifts.
Lunch: Grab a table at Mathallen Oslo, a vibrant food hall showcasing local and international cuisines. Sample Norwegian classics like reindeer stew or modern dishes made with local ingredients.
Afternoon: Spend the rest of your time soaking in Oslo’s cosy shopping scene. The Karl Johans Gate is lined with stores offering everything from high-end fashion to quirky gifts. Don’t miss Julehuset, a shop entirely dedicated to Christmas decorations. At the end of the shopping strip you will also find the Palace and if you time it right you can watch the changing of the guard.
Evening: End your weekend at the Oslo Opera House, not for a show but for the spectacular views from its roof. Watching the sun dip below the horizon, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink, is the perfect way to say goodbye to Oslo.
