How to survive to a long haul flight with kids

Tips for a smooth and entertaining journey

Travelling by plane with kids can be a daunting task, but with a little preparation and creativity, it can turn into a fun adventure for the whole family. Also its important to understand that we are all just whinging parenthood and all kids cry, don't be worried about other people if your little ones get upset on the plane. Here are some tips and strategies to keep the kids entertained.

Preparation

1 - Flight Time - This can be really important and help alot when it comes to flights. If you have the option of different flight times, try and choose one either during the day or a full night flight so they can sleep, rather than them being woken in the middle of the night and being ratty to begin with. If its a full night flight they are more likely to sleep for the duration of the flight which will make things much easier.

2 - Pack Wiseley - Bring a well stocked carry on bag with essentials like snacks, drinks and a variation of different activities to stop them becoming bored. Most of the time you can get snacks and drinks on the plane but they will come at a higher price so its better to bring these with you. Not all planes do come round with snacks either and just have the designated meal and drink times.

3 - Talk to your child - Make sure your kids understand what is happening and where they are going prior to getting to the airport. Its always going to be an exciting time for them so its best to spread that excitement out and gives them time to understand what they can and cant do. It can also help reduce any anxiety they may have.

In Flight

Dependant on the age there are lots of things on the market to keep the kids entertained that are small enough to carry around.

1 - Toys - Toys come in so many different sizes but try to get things that are small enough so they don't take up too much space in your bag. Small action figures, dolls and cars can provide hours of imaginative play. Suction toys and magnets are great for the younger kids.

2 - Creativity - Creative activities can keep the kids entertained for a longer period. Colouring and sticker books are always easy options. You can also get travel play dough and finger painting which doesn't create a mess as you would think. If you have a girl there are also some lovely bracelet beading sets on the market now.

3 - Technology - The good thing is that most long haul flights these days have TV screens with films, TV series and games which can keep the kids entertained enough but I would always pack there tablets and headphones as a back up. This way you can make sure its loaded up with all their favourites and the headphones provided on planes are not usually suitable for kids.

4 - Engagement - Kids just love to play with other people. Make up your own stories or plan ahead a little plan scavenger hunt. If you managed to bag a window seat this can help a lot.

5 - Comfort - I usually always pack blankets. These days a lot of flights provide them but I always worry about the kids being cold so always take one just in case. If your child will keep it on then invest in an eye mask and a neck pillow, this will help them sleep and not get disturbed by the plane lights.

Tips for the parents

1 - Stay Calm - Children can pick up on stress, so try to remain calm and positive.

2 - Be Flexible - Understand that things might not go exactly as planned but that's okay. You can do so much planning but something always seems to put a spanner in the works but just adapt to the situation and stay calm.

3 - Ask for help - Don't hesitate to ask the flight attendants for help if you need it. Sometimes there are also people who will be sat near you that are also mums that have been in your situation and more than willing to assist if you have your hands full.

Flying with kids can be challenging, but dont think too much about it. At the end of the day your going away to make the most amazing memories as a family. Plan ahead and make the plane journey a memorable part of the journey.

I will link below a few of the items I have purchased in the past.
